Hi all,
At 11:50 Friday morning there was a Cattle Egret in the large wetland complex
north of Hwy. 11 on the west side of Hwy. 75, about 1/2 half mile north of
Kansasville, in Racine Co.
It is very close to the road hunkered down in the cattails. It is in breeding
plumage. It was just north of the driveway on the east side of the road with the
house number of 3301 on the mailbox.

reported by Rick Fare
"On August 20 at 10:00AM Greg Baker (a birder visiting from Oregon) and I observed an adult European goldfinch feeding 1 of 2 young at Myers Park. Although I have seen a few in the past and suspected that they might be breeding in the area, this is proof of breeding. He took a few photos and has a video of this feeding behavior."

Racine Lakefront (morning)
reported by Eric H.
Hoy members met at the
Racine lakefront this morning at
Wind Point Lighthouse & Shoop Park as
well as the area near the Pugh Marina. Highlight at Wind Point were, among
others, separate flybys of 2 Glaucous Gulls (adult and immature).
At the Pugh Marina, besides the usual waterfowl, we found a single Ring-necked
Duck and Ruddy Duck at the north end.
Another observer took a swing down to Carre-Hogle Park after the group departed
and saw 2 more Glaucous Gulls (immatures) on the spit of beach to the east of
the turn around.

The Purple Sandpiper, and the Dunlin, were present at Carre-Hogle Park in Racine
around 11:00 A.M. today (Wed Dec 26). No funny gulls out on the ice though that
I could see … just the usual two species. An accipiter, a sharpie by the looks
of it, passed over the car as I was leaving, making what looked like a beeline
for a neighborhood feeder. You get so used to seeing Cooper’s Hawks all year
long in these urban settings that my initial cue for a Sharp-shinned is just
that it looks … well, different. “Hey, that’s an accipiter, but it’s not a
Cooper’s!” Well, probably not—I saw it for all of half a second.

There were very few gulls at the Slaty-backed Gull spot when I arrived about
9:30am, but the Purple Sandpiper was present. One Iceland Gull was observed
flying in and sat for a few minutes out near the small group of gulls, but that
was the only unusual gull present for the hour plus I was there. I got some
decent photos of the Purple Sandpiper though:

And a photo I haven't yet shared of a Kestrel taken a few weeks ago at Wind
Point. It was a very cooperative Kestrel:

I hope that Slaty-backed turns up somewhere nearby. I never made the decision to
get up to see the one last year, so a more local bird would be a great thing.

Hi all,
I went back this morning to try to get pictures of the Purple Sandpiper and Dunlin on the algae maps at Carre-Hogle Park, I started looking to see if there were any rare gulls around. Immediately found an adult non-breeding Lesser Black-backed Gull. Upon a little further inspection, I saw another medium-large adult, non-breeding gull with a dark mantle. I was surprised to see that it had pink legs! The bird had very heavily streaked head (similar to the Menasha bird last winter). My friend Stephan was with me, and while he's not a birder, he said that the legs looked pink as well (and specifically not yellow, as could be compared with the Lesser). The bird had been standing in the water near a frozen patch in the lake and was slightly preening (I could see mirrors on P10 and P9). About the time Rick Fare came by, it flew over to the ice, put its head down and went to sleep. It was still present when I left about 11:30, though still sleeping. The Lesser Black-backed was not. Both shorebirds where.
However, they did fly out to the breakwater at one point, so if you go looking for them and do not find them right away, I would suggest waiting around a little bit. Good birding to all!

Hi fellow birders,
There is a Northern Shrike hanging out at the Pike River Trail which is located
on Old Spring Street east of Stuart Road. (Maps show it as near Timmer Lane).
The shrike was seen briefly on 12/20, and despite very dense fog, I did manage
to find it again today for the Racine CBC. Both days, the bird was on the
west side of the trail, between the second bridge and the cornfield. He's rather
wary....today he flew off just as I was getting my camera out. He stayed within
sight, however, so I managed to get some distant photos in thick fog :(
There are also Am. Robins (11 today) hanging out in red berried trees just
across the street from the trail's small parking area.

I birded the Wind Lake Sod Farms late this afternoon in search for Buff-breasted
Sandpipers. I did not turn any up but had 8 other shorebird species including
Semipalmated and Black-bellied Plover. Most impressive was a group of blackbirds
on the east side of Wind Lake rd just north of Burmeister rd that numbered well
over 1000 birds. There were at least 600 Brewers Blackbirds (by far the most I
have ever seen at once) with the rest being cowbirds, grackles, and red-wingeds.

Arrived just before 7AM at the lighthouse and the first gull of note seen was a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (LBBG). A PEREGRINE FALCON had came in fast at the
group and all the gulls took flight. A few of the gulls settled back on the
water and on the shore including the LBBG. Took a few quick photos with the
camera zoomed at maximum but shortly after a duck hunting boat shot nearby. All
the gulls scattered once again, but the LBB Gull was one of the few gulls to
return.
Had a tip from Marlyn Winter that a Franklin's Gull had been in the area
recently.... The second gull of note this morning was one not noticed until
later while reviewing one of the pictures of the LBBG. Tucked away in the upper
left frame on the water was the

- Wind Lake Sod
Farms
reported by Ted Keyel (posted on WisBirdNet)
Today was the Racine Hoy Audubon's field trip to the Wind Lake Sod Farms. Eight of us got to see:
13 Buff-breasted Sandpipers
2 American Golden Plovers
2 Short-billed Dowitchers
3 Wilson's Snipe
3 Semipalmated Sandpipers
a lot of Killdeer.
These birds were a little south and west of the the intersection of Burmeister and Britton Rd. There's a gravelly pull out and a plowed field with a few small ponds in it. The Buffies were easily startled. We first observed them on the north side of Burmeister Rd, just west of the intersection (with Britton), but they flew across Burmeister into the sod there. Everything else was in the plowed area a little ways to the south of us. It was a great time, with some excellent looks at Buffies and Am.Go.Plovers. Good birding to all!

12/17/2004 - ROSS'S GOOSE - Quarry
Lake Park
"A ROSS'S GOOSE was present this morning at Quarry Lake Park in Racine Co. It
was at the far west side of the 'lake'. This location is mentioned in Haunts.
From I94 and Cty K in Racine Co., go east on K about 4.1 miles. Then bear right
onto Hwy 38 and follow it for 2.5 miles (you will cross about 5 sets of stop and
go lights). The enterance to Quary Lake park is marked on the south (right side)
of 38 (the first right after you had over the bridge at the Root River).

NO Ash-throated Flycatcher was seen today. Last evenings temperatures
had dropped to the coldest of the season, very little insect activity at noon.
Two CAROLINA WRENS were reported behind the garage that is west of the parking

12/13/2004 - ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
at
Shoop Park
Seen again between 8:15 A.M. and at least to 11 A.M. along the brush / shoreline
near the 'second hole' of the golf course.
Also seen at Shoop Park - posting on the WisBirdNet
"Was glad to see that Dennis found the flycatcher earlier this morning. I arrived a little before 11 and found it in the same general area. It definitely could be overlooked. I thought I might have had it earlier in the ravine on the west side of the parking lot but it disappeared almost immediately. Also of note in the area, while birding near the first jetty were fly-bys on the lake. First had two Black Scoters that came and landed to the south of the parking lot, joining 2+ Surf Scoters. However the really interesting sightings---besides the flycatcher---was a JAEGER species that I picked up moving gradually to the south out on the lake. It was an immature and was about half way out. It would disappear behind waves and then suddenly move skyward before repeating the performance. While trying to pick up ID points on it, an interesting bird flew through my field of view, naturally heading north. For a number of seconds I had both in view, but switched to the second bird when I realized it was an interesting looking loon. It came much closer and revealed all the ID points of a PACIFIC LOON. It eventually became lost in some waves, so I tried unsuccessfully to relocate the Jaeger. Due to the distance and limited ID points all that I could say was it was a Jaeger species (probably a Parasitic but Pomarine would be a "remote" possibility.)
The hour that I spent in the wind and cold at Shoop Park and Wind Point (excellent name, especially today!) was a most interesting time!!! And to all of us that are about to embark on the Christmas counts, GOOD LUCK!!! Daryl Tessen - Outagamie County Appleton, WI"

12/11/2004 - ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Shoop Park
Postings to the WisBirdNet:
"Between 7:30 and 8:30 this morning I watched and photographed an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Shoop Park just north of Racine. The bird was at the extreme southeastern corner of Shoop Park, feeding on the ground right at the water's edge among some willows and grass. The bird was not too hard to see but very hard to photograph.

Robert Hughes Chicago""If documentation is sent to and accepted by the WSO Records Committee, the Ash-throated Flycatcher reported this morning from Racine County would be but the second record for Wisconsin. Such records are equally rare over the mid-continent, with 20 valid records over this vast expanse. Winter records for the flycatcher are rarer yet, with only one fully valid winter record to date in the mid-continent. The Dec. 22, 1985 record for Hawkins County, Tennessee is hypothetical. This leaves the Dec. 15, 1990 record from Jefferson County, West Virginia as the only truly valid winter record..... Bob Domagalski, Menomonee Falls"

10/30/2004 - Parasitic Jaeger
Rick Fare and I observed a dark morph juvenile Parasitic Jaeger at Wind Point at about 3PM. Rick had observed it through binocs alone about 20 minutes before I got there. Fortunately for me the bird was cooperative enough to fly back to the north again after I got there and gave us fantastic looks through the scope as it chased and was chased by Herring Gulls. The bird was as close as 150-200 yards at one point and we both saw the bird bank and glide numerous times. Other noteworthy birds for the day included 12 Surf and 5 Black Scoters off Wind Point, a Thayer's Gull at the Racine Marina, and a couple of American Tree Sparrows at Meyers Park out along the break wall. I also observed an odd goose near Meyer's in the soccer fields that I suspect was a Greater White-fronted x Canada Goose. The bird had a solid black beak, mottled white head, orange legs, and a black tail band. I took some pictures of it that I will post soon. Thanks to Rick for getting me a great 18th birthday bird...it will be hard to surpass in the years of birthday birding to come.

10/8/2004 - HUDSONIAN GODWIT - Racine
Visited the shorebird spot, located north of Hwy 20 between Cty V and H - Racine County, this fine misty morning. There is an old brick schoolhouse on the north side of the road with a road that goes north to the Mt. Pleasant Compost Site.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a HUDSONIAN GODWIT feeding and bathing in this long mudflat/shallow water area at 8:00 AM.
Just as I was starting to scope the other shorebirds, BAM!, a PEREGRINE FALCON streaked in, grabbed a LEAST SANDPIPER and flew off to the west out of sight. The PECTORAL SANDPIPERS scattered in alarm along with the 2 GOLDEN PLOVERS and other Least Sandpipers and the Godwit.
LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS again this week in the field. No Pipits heard this time.

"...checked the western Racine County shorebird ponds and found all the regular peeps and Semipalmated Plovers. Wind Lake Sod Farms had Bairds and Least Sandpipers but no large plovers or buff-breasteds. A Peregrine Falcon was harassing the gulls and killdeer. Racines lakefront was quiet with 2 Sanderlings being the only decent shorebird species along North Beach. Wind Point had a Clay-colored Sparrow and Tennessee Warbler - the only two migrant passerines we found there."

"The best pond is still just north of
Hwy. 11 on Hwy. 75. Yes, it is losing area, but not losing shorebirds. There are
more of everything. 1 WILLET, lots of Peeps(for you "Peepophiles"--I'm not
qualified to separate anything out from the "basics"), Semi-Palmated Plover,
Lesser Yellowlegs, lots of Pectorals, some Solitary, and at least one STILT
Sandpiper. A sitting flock of 90 Caspian Terns produced only one juvenile. Lots
of Killdeer, of course.
Hwy K pond just no. of A is pretty much a copy of above with a Great Egret and
Gr. Blue Heron.
The Sod Farms had lots of Killdeer, a flock of 60 Brown Headed Cowbirds (for the
low of the afternoon), 2 BUFF BREASTED Sandpipers (SW of Big Grey Building), 1
BLACK BELLIED Plover (N of 90 degree bend in road).
The Mt. Pleasant Compost Road is starting to pick up with a few Blue Winged Teal
in among the Mallards. Shorebirds are Killdeers, Peeps (maybe a Bairds?), Lesser
Yellowlegs, 8 Greater Yellowlegs, and a couple Semi-Palmated Plovers."

- Wind Lake Sod Farms, posted on the Wisconsin Birding Network by Sean
Fitzgerald
The Wind Lake Sod Farms have a lot of good shorebird habitat. Upon arriving and
pulling over just north of the intersection between Burmeister and Briton Roads
it began to hail. As if on cue, all the shorebirds from all the fields took off
at once and remained in the air until the hail was done. I'm guessing this is
their best defensive action against hail. But anyways; as all the birds took
off, I noticed one BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER flying among some Killdeer as well as
a single Upland Sandpiper. I attempted to relocate these birds after the hail
was done without success. I stopped at the red barn and saw two Black-bellied
Plovers way out in the fields.

7/22/2003 - Racine Lakefront - posted on the WisBirdNet by Sean Fitzgerald
This afternoon I spent about three hours checking a few locations along Racine's
lakefront. As I arrived at Meyer's Park I realized I'd lucked out and checked
the lakefront on a day when there were some very strong winds out of the east.
Everywhere I stopped, thousands of gulls were trying to stay out of the wind on
the lee-side of break walls. Meyer's Park yielded an adult Great Black-backed
Gull that was loafing among the other gulls on the break wall well to the south
of the boat launch. I checked North Beach and the Racine marina and found a
LAUGHING GULL on the west side of the break wall with probably 4000 other RB and
Herring Gulls. I then set my scope up as far out on the break wall as I dared
(waves were sending up heavy spray, making it very slippery on the rocks). I
scanned the eastern horizon for about 30 minutes and I spotted an unidentified
dark morph JAEGER species way out over the lake. Shoop Park (just south of Wind
Point) had 11 species of shorebirds including a juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPER among
a fairly large flock of other peeps. Sanderlings, Semipalmated Plovers, White-rumped
and Baird's Sandpipers were also present. All along the lake I noticed Great
Blue Herons perched on the rocks, piers, and break walls. They would fly out a
few hundred yards, land in the lake, stay there for fifteen seconds, and fly
back with a fish. Most of the birds were in juvenile plumage, but I found this
behavior rather strange. An enjoyable afternoon along Lake Michigan.

Posted to the Illinois listserv- by Jeff
Sundberg
Subject: IBET BT GULL-- IBSP!
Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 21:39:03 -0500 My sister Kris relocated what could only be
the Black-tailed Gull early this evening (6:30, June 13) at the South Unit
of Illinois Beach State Park. I was not there- she describes the bird as
very dark-backed with a red tip on the bill, yellow legs, and a black band near
the end of the tail with a slender white band at the very end of the tail. She
examined BT Gull illustrations in the Sibley, Harrison and Geographic guides and
said the gull was most similar to the illustrations in Sibley. It appeared to be
the same bird as the one in the gull pictures posted yesterday on two Wisconsin
sites.
The Gull was seen on the beach about halfway between the resort and the Dead
River mouth in a huge flock of gulls. She watched it for about 30 minutes, at
which point the flock moved north (but remained in the general area).
I bet I'll see some of you tomorrow!
6/12/2003 - 6:30 PM - BLACK-TAILED GULL Update from Brian Boldt of Milwaukee
"I went back to Racine around 5pm and ran into a few people - in general it sounded like the area had been covered with no luck for over 3 hours. So after a quick check I decided to head south. There were lots of gulls from Carthage College on down. I was scoping the flock on the beach south of Cohorama point in Kenosha, and had the BTGU in with about 500 others, mostly Ring-billeds - this was just after 6:30. I jumped in the car and drove down to the main Simmons Isl. parking lot and set up my camera - this all took about 10 minutes - and when I got out on the beach I never refound the BTGU. There were gulls milling around over the lake, and some moving out to the breakwall; the whole flock was flushed a few times also by people walking the beach. I checked the harbor for about 45 minutes longer with no luck. Hopefully the bird can be refound in the morning, and hopefully it finds a spot it likes!"
Brian stated it was the main sand beach just
north of the channel.

6/12/2003 - 6:50 AM - BLACK-TAILED
GULL first seen at Shoop Park, Racine
from Eric Howe
Ted Keyel and I were scoping the gulls from the Shoop Park
parking lot when a dark-mantled gull caught my eye. From the distance it
appeared to have a ringed-bill as well as red near the tip. Eager at a
closer look we walked along the edge of the golf course near the 2nd hole. Re-finding the gull,
we watched this bird for about 10 minutes,
Larger than a Ring-billed, this dark mantled gull indeed had a ring near the end
of its bill and the most unusual red tipped bill, unlike anything we had
encountered before. It stretched it's wings casually and preened for
several minutes before taking flight to the south. The last third of the tail
was black, a distinct line between black and white. Photos indicate a thin white
band of white at the end of the tail. Yellowish legs.
Red orbital eye ring and yellow eye. The
under wings went from a whitish-gray towards the all dark wing tips. It
circled in the distance as it traveled south towards the Racine Harbor/North
Beach Area.

Scouted the remainder of the sod farms and found numerous Pects, both yellowlegs and quite a few Killdeer. The best areas seem to be the junction of Olson and Britton Rds and then west on Burmeister Rd for about a half mile or so. CTY S was not productive. Tom Wood also indicated the same results. Nice to see a few Buffs finally turning up elsewhere--"

On the way home we stopped at a small pond at the intersection of CTH D and Hill Valley Rd. Here we found at least 5 Common Moorhens incl. two young that didn’t look like they could fly. 7/7/02 - SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Kenosha, posted on the Wisconsin Birding Network by Karl David
"Around 7:00 A.M. Sunday July 7 a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER made a brief appearance at the mouth of the Pike River
in Kenosha."...."I suspect it is, because this is not the right habitat for this
bird to stick around, and in fact it disappeared to the northwest while I was
there, and it did not reappear in the half hour or so I remained, including
driving around the immediate vicinity checking telephone wires and other
prominent perches."..."I surmise it was an immature bird because it was very
pale, no salmon pink coloration was detected on the flanks and axillaries, and
the tail, though inordinately long enough to give the bird seen in profile that
characteristic "flying pencil" look, was not seen bifurcated into a
swallow-tailed effect. In fact, the most prominent field mark was the extremely
pale back and head, appearing white in the bright sun, contrasting with the dark
upper surface of the wing. This was noticeable when the bird banked in flight,
where also the disproportionate length of the tail gave the bird a very
stubby-winged appearance."..."I heard the bird before I saw it, hearing several
raspy "reeeps" sounding like an agitation call, though not a familiar one.
Indeed, the bird was being harassed by a resident passerine, a blackbird or
grackle."
7/4/02 - At 6:06 AM this morning, the new Racine Peregrine Liberty was delivered her breakfast. A bright yellow and black Goldfinch! She eagerly accepted the meal from her parent and retreated back into the nesting platform. Her facial feathers have noticeably developed since last week, now giving her more of the appearance of a Peregrine. She still retains a bit of white feathers at the top of her head. See photos below of her 1 week ago.
At Cliffside Park 4 DICKCISSELS were present. The male shown below has a deformed crossed bill, but sang beautifully none the less for the entire time we were there. Another male was in pursuit of a female. Yet another male sang in the field west of the Cliffside property line on private lands. Again this week were a number of singing CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS along with Savanna, Field, and Song Sparrows. One adult Red-headed Woodpecker. Wood Thrush, Red-eyed Vireos, Indigo Buntings, and Brown Thrashers all quite vocal. One YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was last seen on 6/23. They have become less vocal since they were first seen in early June. This morning, a few of the harsh one note calls were heard, but no Chat seen due to the dense shrub cover.
