Canceled — Pike River Pathway Spring Bird and Woodcock Walk

CANCELED– Due to continuing rain and thunderstorms into late this afternoon, the field trip for Wednesday, April 13 has been canceled.

We will meet at the section of the Pike River Pathway Park in Mount Pleasant located south of Old Spring Street, the Wendi Court parking area:

• From the Airline Road and Old Spring Street intersection, go east 0.2 miles and turn right (south) onto Timmer Lane.
• Continue south 0.25 miles to the end of Timmer Lane, then turn right (west) onto Wendi Court.
• Proceed to the end of Wendi Lane and to left in to the parking lot; click here for a map.
• For overflow parking, if needed, park at the parking area south of Old Spring Street and then walk south along the trail 0.3 miles where there is a fork in the trail.

Meet by 5:30 P.M. We’ll walk the paved loop trail south from the parking area, approximately 1.6 miles, in search of early spring migrants. We may also hear Wilson’s Snipe ‘winnowing’ as sunset approaches as the males perform their courtship displays.
Or, meet by 7:30 P.M. at parking area at the end of Wendi Ct. We’ll walk a portion of the pathway and await to hear the “peents” and view the aerial dances of the twittering “Timberdoodle”, the American Woodcock, at twilight.

The American Woodcock may begin call just after 7:30 P.M. (depending if skies are overcast or clear) and will conclude around 8 or 8:30 P.M.

Recommendations: Wear hiking shoes, dress warmly, and bring a flashlight for the walkout at dusk.
