Hoy Meeting: Monitoring American Kestrels

February 2, 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Over the past 25 years the American Kestrel population has plummeted in the United States and Canada. What is the cause? What can we do to help restore kestrel numbers? Learn what habitat and nest boxes can help Kestrels and how to monitor this small falcon. What can be done to prevent European Starlings from nesting in boxes meant for kestrels? Where can you get more info and send your data to? This program answers these questions and more.

Guest Speaker:
Patrick Ready has been monitoring American Kestrel boxes for Madison Audubon Society for 10 years. He has built nest boxes and installed “tip down” pole systems and developed his own method to monitor boxes. He manages 12 nest boxes in southern Dane County and assists in banding kestrel chicks and adults. His best monitoring season yielded 26 fledglings.

If you are unable to attend the program in-person, please join the program virtually, beginning at 7:00 PM.
